Entrepreneurship: Competitors

Importance of Using Industry Codes in Research

Competitive Analysis: Using industry codes accelerates research on your competitors.

Industry codes are used to categorize businesses operating into similar lines of business. These codes define industries broadly, and narrowly, using hierarchical numbering schemes in most cases.

Most article databases, company databases and demographic data tools (EBSCO, Business Source Complete, PrivCo, SimplyMap) allow you to search for companies by entering one or more industry codes, e.g., NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System) or SIC (Standard Industrial Classification).

The advantage to using NAICS or SIC Codes is that you can target your competitors within the same business niche, and by using other tools, within specific geographic areas.
