Here are some of the BCIT services that TechCollider members have access to.

MediaWorks is a digital workshop and makerspace where TechCollider members can create, innovate, and collaborate to turn their ideas into life. They offer a creative space, industry standard equipment, and professional guidance from their team to help you succeed.

Help & Support

Have an idea for a project or just need some guidance on where to start? You don’t need an appointment, but you can book one during our busier times.

Project Room Need a quiet space to meet with your peers, generate ideas, or develop a presentation? You can use our project room if you need a space to work in.
3D printing

3D printing is an additive manufacturing process where a CAD or a 3D model is made into a physical object by adding material layer by layer to build volume. It is mainly used for rapid prototyping. MediaWorks has multiple FDM (fused filament fabrication) printers and one SLA (Stereolithography) printer.

  • FDM Materials: PLA – a polymer made from renewable resources such as corn starch
  • SLA Material: Liquid resin cured to hardened plastic
  • Requirement: an STL or OBJ file is required to print
  • Costs: $ 0.05 / gram of material used for PLA and $. 060 per hour, a minimum spend is required for resin printing, please see our full price list for details
Die Cutting

In printing, die cutting is used to create custom shapes and designs. The Cricut die-cutter can cut over 100 types of materials from fabric, to vinyl to foil.

  • Material: Vinyl, cardstock, fabric, or bring your own!
  • Requirement: .svg or any vector file for cutting and scoring
  • Cost: $  / minute +  material cost, please see our full price list
Laser cutting & engraving

Laser cutting is a CNC process where a focused laser beam is used to accurately cut through a material, as well as scoring and engraving on the surface.

  • Material: draft wood, plywood, or acrylic
  • Requirement: .svg or any vector file for cutting and scoring, .jpg or .bmp file for engraving
  • Cost: $ 0.10 / minute +  material cost, please see our full price list
Vacuum Forming

Vacuum forming is a process used to make 3D molds of everyday objects, the Vaquform machine can also be used to take molds of 3D prints. It is a great addition to the 3D prototyping process to help with the development of 3D product designs.

  • Material: draft wood, plywood or acrylic
  • Requirement: .svg or any vector file for cutting and scoring, .jpg or .bmp file for engraving
  • Cost: $ 0.10 / minute +  material cost, please see our full price list
3D Scanning

3D scanning is a process that scans objects, allowing them to be turned into accurate and textured digital 3D models. These can be 3D printed and used as part of the prototype process.

  • Requirement: A physical object to scan, if possible please avoid black, but if not a rinseable developer can be applied to aid scanning
  • Cost: Free
Large Format Printing

Print your custom event posters, presentation boards and construction plans using our top-of-the-line Epson SureColor P20000 printer, designed for high-production photographic, fine art and indoor display graphics printing.

  • Requirement: PDF file
  • Cost: $5.00 / square ft for full colour prints $2.50 / square ft for engineering, architecture plans
Audio and Video Recording

Our new and upcoming casting studio will be a place to record and edit your audio and video recordings. Do you need to do a voice-over for your video, or want to make a podcast about your project? Come and use our Casting Studio after having an orientation.

  • Software: Camtasia, Audacity, Adobe Suite,
  • Computers: Alienware Aurora PC, Lenovo laptop
  • Audio Hardware: 2 Sony Condensor Microphones, Rode Condenser Microphone, Tascam Audio Interface, U-Phoria Audio Interface with Pre-Amplifier, Rode Caster Pro Mixer, Audio Technica Headphones, KRK Rokit 5 audio monitors
  • Cost: Free, but orientation is required
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Our virtual reality services are currently being upgraded into a VR space with multiple play areas set up for learning, development, testing and play with a range of virtual reality applications. Come and use our VR room after completing an orientation.

  • VR Hardware: 2 PC’s and a Playstation. Oculus, Vive and Playstation headsets
  • AR Hardware: Microsoft Hololens1 and 2
  • Cost: Free, but orientation is required
Digital Transfer
(staff only)

Transfer your analogue content such as videotapes onto DVDs or MP4. All copyright must be cleared by BCIT Library Technical Services prior to digitizing.

  • Formats: VHS, DVD, Cassette
  • Cost: Free

 

A wide range of services are available to support the development of lifelong learning and digital literacy for entrepreneurs. Expert staff are available to provide one-on-one consultation and workshops; and specialized collections, databases, research guides, and learning resources are available to support industry and market research, funding, business planning, and entrepreneurial skills development. The BCIT Summit Centre offers a range of services to help inspire individuals or groups in their path to entrepreneurship.

Service Description
One-on-one consultation services Summit Centre staff are available for individual one-on-one appointments, as the first touch point for any TechCollider member interested in exploring entrepreneurship. 3D printing, media production, graphic design, and production services MAKE+ is a group of multidisciplinary research staff focused on product and process development, evaluation, applied research projects, and education. At MAKE+ we can take your ideas to the next level. We are highly skilled in the areas of evaluation, ergonomic assessments, health, consumer, and industrial technology development, automation and electronics. Contact Jaimie Borisoff.
Industry partnerships and research opportunities The Applied Research Liaison Office (ARLO) provides a wide range of support services and guidance to BCIT faculty, researchers, students, TechCollider members, and industry partners. ARLO helps facilitate solutions to industry challenges, creates beneficial partnerships and practical learning opportunities for students, assists BCIT faculty and researchers with their research programs, and supports commercially relevant new technology products and applications.  Contact Applied Research .

In addition to lending books and DVDs, BCIT Library loans out technology, such as laptops (3 hr limit) and iPads (4 day limit).

Learning Commons peer tutors are students at BCIT who have achieved superior grades in their previous terms and who understand the pressures and challenges of learning. They are here to:

  • Help you learn and apply new concepts
  • Share learning strategies that have helped them succeed

The Writing Centre offers free one-to-one writing support services to all TechCollider members. Peer tutors are BCIT students who can help you develop your writing skills in business, technical, and scientific reports.  Contact Learning Commons.
